We understand that the word “extraction” can cause some concern. But it truly does not have to be an alarming or concerning procedure in any regard.

With today’s technology, and our many Dentists R Us offices offering sedation dentistry, we have taken all the discomfort out of the process.

Not only is a tooth extraction a routine procedure, wisdom teeth extractions are a commonplace procedure also. We guard against extracting most other teeth, as they are necessary and helpful to a full bite and complete smile. But wisdom teeth, as discussed in our previous blog post, are usually a hindrance to your bite, and a potential concern for your smile.

Especially if you have already undergone orthodontic treatment, having these additional teeth grow in could disrupt the perfect smile your mouth has worked hard to acquire over the –likely- years of braces or Invisalign.

The Extraction Process

Although sometimes wisdom teeth extractions are completed by an oral surgeon if the process is a more complicated one, often your local dental professional can complete this procedure in office.

As mentioned, we offer sedation dentistry, and by administering a general anesthesia, we are able to put our patients into a comfortable slumber while we complete the process.

After your wisdom tooth or teeth are removed, you will likely be asked to bite down on a piece of gauze for 30-45 minutes as you ease yourself into an awake mode, as well as help your mouth heal from the incisions that were made to remove your teeth.

You should experience minimal pain once the freezing has left your system, and any discomfort or swelling should go away within a few days, and be minimized with a general pain product such as Tylenol.

These incisions will heal completely relatively quickly, and your bite will remain as it was …ideally being healthy and straight.
