A crown can be made up of a wide-range of metals and finishes, and at DentistsRUs – we wanted to help our reading audience with their “Understanding the Different Building Blocks of a Crown”!
Stainless Steel Crowns
Stainless steel crowns are crowns that are prefabricated and usually intended for non-permanent teeth as a temporary solution. This crown offers optimal protection for the tooth, and is often used for children still expecting their adult teeth to come in. Because it covers the entire tooth it protects that tooth from any more decay, keeping the underlying tooth healthy for when it does erupt.
Metal crowns can include gold alloy, palladium or nickel. Often less of your tooth will need to be removed to place this type of crown on it, and it causes minimal wear on other teeth, as well – such crowns are known to last a long time. These types of crowns are usually used for back molars that can’t be easily seen, as they don’t have a high cosmetic appeal.
Porcelain crowns are actually porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crowns, and can be tooth coloured to match your natural teeth. They are known to cause more wear on other teeth, but are often chosen for their cosmetic appeal.
Other crown types available include all-resin dental crowns – offering a beautiful finish but also prone to quick wear, as well as all-ceramic or all-porcelain crowns that are often chosen by those with metal allergies.
