Your toothbrush is intended to be a tool for cleaning your teeth and keeping your oral health in check, but did you know that your toothbrush could actually be a partial culprit behind getting you ill too? Which is why DentistsRUs wanted to inform our readers on ‘The Truth About Germs and Your Toothbrush’!
A Cold, The Flu and Your Toothbrush
Seasonal sicknesses are no fun for anyone, especially when you get hit by the same strain of cold or flu in a short period of time. Which leads us to the importance of changing your toothbrush (or toothbrush head if you have an electric version) after being sick.
As cautious as you can be about washing your hands and getting enough rest in order to get back on track health-wise, using a toothbrush that has been in and out of your mouth while you have been ill can actually cause you to remain under the weather – so cleaning and replacing your brush is imperative.
Clearly you can’t change it every day, so during the times in which you are sick (and likely most contagious), place your toothbrush head in an alcohol-based mouthwash in order to diminish the germs on your toothbrush, and then once you are feeling better, go ahead and replace your toothbrush entirely. It is a cost-effective way to stay healthy, and help those around you do the same.
Other Oral Precautions to Take No Matter the Season (or sick day)
Germs are a clingy bunch, so additional steps to take even when you aren’t sick include – washing your hands before and after flossing. All those bacteria-laden particles between your teeth inevitably end up on your hands when you floss – so ensure you wash them away once you’re done, and start with clean hands as well.
Also, air drying your toothbrush will ensure a proper (partial) death of bacteria within the bristles. SO instead of putting it into a toothbrush holder for safe keeping, or even tucking it into a drawer – choose to leave it out in order for maximum dry air and oxygen to minimize the bacteria.
Lastly, sick of not – replace your toothbrush every 3-4 months in order to keep your brush the right shade of healthy.
