Teens have a lot on their minds in modern day society, partially due to the constant media feed they dine at. So a nudge here and a prompt there to help promote oral care can really help keep them on track.
The Daily Reminder Do’s of Dental Care
- Brush at least twice a day, one of which time’s definitely being before bed, and ideally after eating any meal
- Use a fluoride toothpaste
- Use a small to medium sized brush head, and a soft bristle as to not damage gums
- Brush for at least 2 minutes
- Floss at least once a day, or use an “interdental” brush, which is a fantastic modern method of cleaning in-between teeth to remove plaque, and better prevent tartar buildup
Encourage your teen to also keep sugary treats and drinks to mealtimes as apposed to during the day/night, as it will help stave off cavities. And if sugary drinks are being consumed, ask them to use a straw to keep the sugar-laced liquid away from the teeth as much as possible.
As well, remind them to limit mouthwash as overuse can rid the mouth of its natural bacteria. Instead, a sugar-free gum can help to keep breath fresh, and help to even remove food particles – keeping teeth “cleaner” between brushing.
Visits to your family dentist in the Lower Mainland should be at least once a year, but cleanings twice a year are recommended for optimal oral care.
