Toddlers are a growing and hungry bunch, so they are often snacking on one (ideally) healthy treat or another. Their small stomachs only contain enough room to store small mini-meals at a time, and these meals provide them with the energy they need to continually be in motion.

Along with 3 meals a day, you will likely want to offer your toddler 3 snacks in-between those meals, but there are snacks you should opt out of in order to ensure your toddlers teeth are being properly maintained.

Snacks to Avoid Giving Your Toddler

As with any age or stage of growth, maintaining oral health is important to avoid cavities. Avoiding sugary and highly acidic foods and drinks is important to keeping bacteria at bay, and avoiding the increased risk for decay.

The more frequently your child’s teeth are exposed to sugar, the worse the potential effects.

Toddlers really have no need for added sugar to their snacks, and the snacks themselves should have little to no sugar content within them.

Granted, it can be difficult to find foods without sugar, but here are some ideal Sugar-Free Foods to Offer Your Toddler

  • Whole cheese slices
  • Sliced fresh fruit
  • Veggie sticks
  • Plain crackers and rice cakes
  • Sandwich’s made from whole-grain bread

We can understand there will be occasions when your child will be exposed to sugar, and this is where regular oral care comes into play. Regular tooth brushing (2-3 times a day) becomes an important habit to create at this stage of life, and can greatly increase oral health and decrease potential decay.
