Little else is more exciting than when you’re expecting a brand new bundle of joy, and with Mothers Day just around the corner, expecting moms are likely all eager with the anticipation of what motherhood will bring.

Leading up to the months before your baby arrives, you will likely notice changes to your body apart from your beautiful growing baby belly. Hair, skin, nails and teeth – for some women – all seem to become a part of the pregnancy process, and not necessarily in a negative way.

Some women experience an increased growth in their hair, stronger nailed and a glow to their skin they have not seen in years. However, oral care seems to be the greatest concern, and moms-to-be sometimes are not sure how to handle their dental care during this time.

So DentistsRUs wants to help our expecting moms understand what to expect with your oral care during pregnancy…

Pregnancy Hormones vs. Oral Care
As we’re sure you’re well aware, your hormones have and will change over the course of your pregnancy, and with them there is a potential increased risk for developing gum disease and/or tooth decay.

Your baby is in need of as many nutrients as your body can supply, so sometimes they may be “taking” what you don’t have to give – which is often the case with ones oral health. So visiting a dentist before or during specific times within your pregnancy will help to prevent any concerns.

Pregnancy – When Not to Visit the Dentist
The first trimester and the second half of your third trimester are the only times recommended NOT to see a dentist, as these are important developmental and growth cycle times for your baby. Emergencies can of course arise, and those can be addressed on a patient-to-patient basis.

Pregnancy – Allowable Dental Treatments
A regular dental checkup can be conducted during the second trimester, which will allow for a cleaning and checking your gums for gingivitis. All other treatments should wait until after birth, apart from emergency services as mentioned.

At DentistsRUs, we are here to help ensure the comfort and care of our patients no matter which stage in life they find themselves in. We offer a variety of dental professionals throughout the Lower Mainland who can provide you with a dental checkup and cleaning during your pregnancy and would be happy to care for you during this exciting time!
