Oral Pathology might not be a term a lot of people know, or understand for that matter. But it is basically a checkup of the mouth to look for abnormalities – such as cancer.

The inside of your mouth is lined with a special type of skin called “mucosa”. This skin should be smooth and coral pink in color, and any alteration in this appearance could be a warning and a call for an oral pathology exam.

There are many conditions that can occur in the mouth or jaw, either alone or in conjunction with some other illness in the body. But oral cancer alone represents about 3% to 4% of all cancers in North America.

Book An Appointment For An Oral Pathology Exam If…

You see abnormal reddish or whitish patches in the mouth.

You see or feel a sore that fails to heal.

You see or feel a lump, growth, or thickening anywhere inside of the mouth.

You have a chronic sore throat, hoarseness, or difficulty swallowing.

These changes can be detected on the lips, cheeks, roof of mouth, tongue, throat, and gum tissues around the teeth. Any patient with oral, facial and/or neck pain without an obvious cause or reason may also be at risk for oral cancer.

Suspicious patches, lumps or sores that persist should not be ignored. A biopsy can conducted to gather enough information for a diagnosis, and from there you will be offered a treatment plan or course of action.
