Parenting is chalk full of to-do lists, and one of those many to-do’s is ensuring the healthy growth of your child’s teeth.

Whether it’s knowing when to schedule their first dentist appointment, or at what point they need to begin to floss, or at what stage braces might need to be introduces …these are all areas our Lower Mainland Dental Professionals can help parents with.

Dental Care – In the Beginning

Optimal oral care requires proactive care before a baby’s first tooth even erupts. Teeth are forming below your baby’s gums, and as such, their gums need to be kept clean. Just as you would brush your child’s teeth to clear them of bacteria and debris, so too should you wipe down your baby’s gums with a soft damp cloth in order to clear away bacteria from their gums, and ensure it is not causing harm to their growing teeth below.

Dental Care – The Toothy Years

After your baby’s teeth begin to emerge, a soft infant toothbrush can be used with water to gently clean them. Toothpaste should not be used until the age of 2, and even then, you will only use a smudge of children’s toothpaste that is safe for your child if they happen to swallow it.

You should supervise your child when brushing their teeth up until the age of 5, after which time they have likely learned how to adequately clean their teeth without a parents help. However, it doesn’t hurt to take a look after each brush to ensure it is adequate.

DentistsRUs offers a fun online tutorial video for parents and kids to watch together on how to brush their teeth. Feel free to take a look at it here for optimal oral care in the home, and allow us to help you maintain the health of your child’s teeth at one of our dental offices below…
