Helping Your Kids Create Positive Habits

As parents, we often try to assist our kids in as many ways as possible. Regardless of if you’re a helicopter parent, or simply a concerned parent …we can often delve too much into our children’s lives and prevent them from creating their own healthy habits.

From healthy habits to hygiene, organization skills to managing their time effectively for school and extra curricular activities. All these things often fall on your to-do list, watching over their every move and ensuring they’re where they should be.

Granted, the age of the child needs to be taken into account, but as of Grade 1 …kids quickly get use to structure and ensuring they manage their time effectively.

Kids will be emulating your behaviour, so if you’re beginning to restructure your own positive habits, they will fall into step much more readily. In addition, it is important that we as parents, allow our kids to learn, while still ensuring their wellbeing from afar …allowing new and positive habits to form of their own (subtly suggested) accord.

Getting Started

Start and end the day with positive habits. Yes …we’re talking about brushing and flossing! It’s a “clean start” (and/or end) to both you and your child’s day.

Create a calendar together. One that offers them the opportunity to keep track of, and see their successes. From teeth brushing, to homework, to chores and after school activities, make it visually stimulating and allow for a reward system for a job well done.

Create your lists together. Apart from your “at a glance” calendar …make to-do lists for daily activities, homework projects, grocery lists where they can plan their lunches and be proud of their healthy choices.

Get them involved in planning a family function once a month. Not only does this make them feel important, but also gives them responsibility to plan and deliver a fun-filled family event.

Lastly …create some sort of “dream list” together. Whether it’s a collective family “vision board”, places you want to go, items you want to purchase, events you want to participate in …the “dreams” are endless …and having focused goals in sight is a great way to help make them come true!
