Many people enjoy the drifting away of the hot summer months, and embrace the cooler air of fall. It’s a season that brings renewed structure, and many exciting holidays.

Much like the New Year, fall is a great time to take stock of what habits are beneficial, and which ones no longer serve us and should address.

Bad habits are not necessarily innately “bad”, they are simply a way of life one falls into that is comfortable and convenient, or perhaps for children – they are mimicking the behaviours of their peers or parents.

However, if there is an area or areas in your life you want to change, as an individual or collectively as a family, did you know that you can break a bad habit (or create a good one) in one month’s time? Science has shown that, with conscious and consistent effort, we all have the ability to break or create a habit within 3-4 weeks.

As dental professionals, we see the outcomes of bad oral habits.

Topping our list:

–       Neglecting to floss

–       Sporadic teeth brushing

Ironically, one’s smile is rated by 90% of Canadians to be the most important physical feature they have, and the one area they find most attractive in others …even above physical fitness.

In yet only 30% of these same Canadians address their oral care as recommended by their dentists. These bad habits cause bad breath, cavities, gum disease …the list goes on.

These types of bad habits can be easily addressed, broken, and reinstated with good habits …providing fresh breath, lowering the potential for cavities, and nearly eliminating gum disease.
