As Halloween quickly approaches, parent panic at the thought of the decay causing candy that is about to rain down on their child’s teeth. However, Halloween or otherwise, decay is a reality many children face, which is why considering dental sealants for your child is a great idea in order to better maintain their oral health during these vital young years.
What is a Dental Sealant?
A dental sealant is a plastic surface coating placed on the larger back teeth (molars and premolars) to protect them from potential decay. The dentine is soft during the formation of your child’s teeth, and the molars and premolars have many grooves in them – keeping food and plaque “tucked away” longer, creating a greater risk for decay to occur. These grooves are often difficult to get a toothbrush to fit into, and plaque can become trapped in these teeth, leading to cavities.
Dental sealants simply add to the protection of your child’s teeth, providing a protective layer to the surface of their teeth, filling in the grooves and pits and resulting in a smooth surface over molars and premolars.
Dental Sealant Candidates
Although everyone is a candidate for dental sealants, children are often the ones that utalize them most, as children’s teeth are softer than adults, and more prone to decay if not maintained appropriately. During their growing years, dental sealants will ensure that their overall health is better maintained, and that the adult teeth will not be at risk for transferred decay.
At DentistsRUs, we provide a variety of dental professionals in the Lower Mainland who can address dental sealants for your child. So feel free to call any one of our offices to inquire further about this, and keep your child’s teeth healthy for years to come!
