Although brushing your teeth might seem second nature, often times we are going about it incorrectly and potentially causing concerns within our mouth. Even the most basic things can be overlooked, so at DentistsRUs – we wanted to share these ‘Common Teeth Brushing Mistakes to Avoid’!
Choose Your Toothbrush Wisely
The toothbrush isle can be a daunting experience with so many choices, colours, functions and marketing ploys – it can be difficult to know which toothbrush to choose. Whether you prefer a power toothbrush or a manual one, there is one rule of thumb you should abide by, and that is the fact that your toothbrush needs to have soft bristles. The bristles on your toothbrush can be harmful to your gums and teeth if they are too hard, so don’t assume a hard bristled brush will better brush your teeth; it can actually scrape and wear down your teeth and gums unnecessarily.
Loosen Your Grip
Scrubbing vigorously at your teeth also is not the better, cleaner choice. Once again, you could be causing damage to your teeth and gums by brushing too hard, so remember – slow and steady wins the race to remove plaque and clean your teeth effectively.
Replace Your Toothbrush
Although it might seem like your toothbrush has a long shelf life as it appears “fine”, your toothbrush should be replaced every 3-4 months. Which also rings true for an electric toothbrush, as they possibly undergo even more wear and tear than a regular toothbrush and tend to be a lot smaller, which means they cover a larger area more often. Not only do the bristles wear down, but your toothbrush is also collecting harmful bacteria you will not want to put in your mouth.
Make Brushing Your Teeth Count
Instead of a quick brush, make brushing your teeth count. A fully clean mouth, including flossing and rinsing, can be far more effective than brushing simply to freshen your breath. Removing all the plaque on and between your teeth will keep your teeth cleaner longer, and your breath fresher, resulting in a more effective brushing routine that lasts.
