Coconut Oil …Oral Health Benefits You Can Take A Bite Out Of

A recent study, conducted in September of 2012 by the scientists at the Athlone Institute of Technology, uncovered that enzyme-treated coconut oil inhibited the growth of the Streptococcus bacterium found in the oral cavity.

That is a mouthful of technical words. We know. Simply put, enzyme-treated coconut oil reproduces a result similar to the digestion process. The enzyme-induced breakdown of the oil produces acids that are effective in attacking most strains of bacteria.

With cavities being no stranger to the North American community at large, dental professionals welcome this finding. And with a boom in the many benefits of coconut-induced products, this is one that definitely makes the dental professionals at Dentists R Us smile.

Dr. Damien Brady, on staff at the Athlone Institute of Technology, was quoted as saying: “It is important that we turn our attention to new ways to combat microbial infection. Incorporating enzyme-modified coconut oil into dental hygiene products would be an attractive alternative to chemical additives, particularly as it works at relatively low concentrations”

For those who enjoy the tropical taste of coconut, we definitely see a line of toothpastes containing this enzyme-treated coconut oil, coming onto the marketplace soon. After all, who wouldn’t buy a tasty tropical party in your mouth?!

If, in fact, they come up with a coconut-flavoured toothpaste, we vote it should be called “Crazy Coconut”.
