You may or may not be aware, but plaque is the sticky film found on your teeth. It often has no colour, but is a combination of bacteria and sugars that continually form on our teeth. Plaque is the culprit behind many-a-thing including: cavities, gum disease, and in it’s hardened form (from lack of daily maintenance) it can turn into tartar.
It should also be noted, that it’s not a matter of “finding out” whether or not you have plaque, the fact is …we all do. Bacteria is constantly forming in our mouth, and starches can turn into sugars as well …so bacteria is a constant, and constantly needs to be brushed off your teeth in order to maintain optimal oral health.
Plaque will attack your teeth with the acid that it produces after you eat, and with repeated acid attacks, your tooth enamel can diminish, becoming increasingly thin, and potentially causing the loss of your enamel entirely.
Plaque is a gum irritant as well, as its resting place is right on the base of your teeth at your gum-line. This can lead to gingivitis, periodontal disease, and in extreme cases – tooth loss.
Minimizing the effect of plaque is fairly simple and involves the following:
– brush your teeth 2-3 times a day, after meals and before bed
– floss your teeth to insure all food debris has been removed from between your teeth
– limit the consumption of sugary, starchy and acidic food and drinks
– visit your dentist regularly for cleanings
Only a dentist (or usually a hygienist) can fully “clean” your teeth, as it pertains to scaling and removing tartar buildup and plaque, which can lurk beneath the gum line. As such, it is important that you regularly visit your dentist in order to maintain healthy teeth.
